Hill College was recently renewed to receive the Carl D. Perkins Grant with an award amount just over $160,000. The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act is a source of federal funding to states for the improvement of secondary and post-secondary career and technical education programs.

Grant funds will be used for support services to equip students for high tech/high demand career fields. Support programs benefitting from the funds include career services and career exploration to assist students with connecting to a career pathway. An especially attractive benefit of the funds, for students who qualify, is approximately $30,000 for mileage, child care, books and supply reimbursements for close to 50 students. In addition, the grant provides for free tutoring for qualified technical students.

“Access to education and student support services are critical to students’ success, particularly in career and technical programs. It is especially critical for special population students and students in non-traditional gender programs such as men in nursing and women in welding or automotive,” said Dr. Pam Boehm, Hill College President.

Special populations is a term used to identify a variety of students, such as students with disabilities, individuals who are from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children; individuals who are preparing for non-traditional fields; single parents, including single pregnant women, displaced homemakers, and individuals with limited English proficiency.
